The First Christmas Tree
I heard this true story on the radio and would like to share it with you. This is the story about how the first real Christmas tree came about. It was around the year 675, in a village that had just had a terrible winter storm. The people had gathered together and were going to offer up a sacrifice to their god, Oden. A Christian monk, by the name of Monophus, heard about this terrible thing that was going to be done. Just when they were about ready to kill a boy as their sacrifice, the monk shouted out, “Stop in the name of Jesus Christ.” This shook everyone because they hadn’t expected anyone to interfere. The person that was offering up this boy said, “Get out, leave us alone, we have to offer a sacrifice unto Oden.” The monk said, “Let the boy go. If Oden is a real god he can take care of himself.” The villagers were afraid of what they thought Oden would do if they did not sacrifice, but they finally untied the boy and let him go. No bolt of lightning came, no rolling thunder, no disaster of any kind came upon the villagers.
Monophus together with other monks went and talked to the villagers about the saving power of Jesus Christ. And many of them repented of their sins and were converted to Jesus Christ. Instead of sacrificing the boy, they planted a tree to honor the true God. Monophus put a candle on the tree, and so did the other monks to signifiy the blessed light and glory of Jesus Christ. So when you light your Christmas tree, think about the love and mercy of Jesus Christ who is the light of the world.
