Our True Identity – Lindsay Schmidt
February 8, 2019

Have you ever heard someone say that they are trying to find themselves? They may say it when they are 20 or 50 or 75 but at some point, we all realize that we need a reminder of who we are. Why is that? This is what I have found in my time of trying to find myself: we have begun to take on all the identities that do not belong to us. Our eyes have become so blinded to who we are by all the lies, circumstances, memories, situations that we have gone through or currently go through everyday. We have voices and perceptions of ourselves all around us that tell us “who we are”. We have our own perception of ourselves, the opinion of other people becomes a voice in our heads, the perception of what we think people think of us, then we have the voice in our heads, the loudest voice possibly, the voice and perception of ourselves through the eyes of the enemy. All of these different views of ourselves show up in front of us daily. When we wake up and look ourselves in the mirror we begin to judge ourselves, whether kindly or harshly. Then, we meet up with some friends and they lift you up by saying “you look beautiful with your hair that way” and you begin to smile. Or they tear you down with a “oh your wearing that dress again?” comment and suddenly that voice is the loudest thing in your head…the second voice. Next, we go out and we see people look at us a certain way and we begin to think “oh great that person doesn’t like my hair, should I change it? Do I match? Am I wearing the right clothes that are “in” right now?…The Third voice. And finally, the always constant voice that says “you’re not strong enough to get through this” or “they don’t really love you” or “they are just pretending to like you when really they just want to use you”…the worst voice. So in these situations we begin to wonder who we truly are.

Who are you?

When all these voices are screaming in your head and you don’t know which one is the truth.

Who are you?

When your eyes get clouded by all you see around you and all the judgments you have to try to stand clear of.

Who are you?

When there are expectations you must live up to, whether they are your own expectations or the expectations of someone else.

Who are you? Who am I? Who are we?

We will find this answer where we find every true and good thing, our bibles. 1 Peter 2:9 says this truth, But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an royal nation, a peculiar people. We are royal. We are the children of the God most high. Ezekiel 16:10-13 says this truth: I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with badgers' skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk. I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck. And I put a jewel on thy forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head. Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thou didst prosper into a kingdom. We are so beautiful and important to God. We are individually decorated by Him. Ephesians 2:10 says this truth: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. We were created in God’s image. Ephesians 2:6 says this truth: And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. We sit together in heavenly places with God. Think about that for a minute. In all of the madness here on earth, with all of the voices, the expectations, the standards, the perceptions, God wants us to remember that He has placed us with him in heaven, has decorated us devinley, has made each of us unique and beautiful, and has made each one of us in HIS image. He cares. He loves us more than anyone. So that means we shouldn’t listen to any of the other voices, or try to be anything other than that which God has created us to be; a masterpiece. A unique, one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Beautiful in all of our flaws.

It is something we must remind ourselves of daily. Something we must always hold in our hearts and minds. The enemy will never cease. He will never give up the fight for our souls and if that means tearing you apart piece by piece, he will do it. That is why we must never stop. We must never let his voice be louder than that of our Creator. As long as we believe only God’s truth, we will be undeterred by anything else. But we must fight daily. Place reminders around your house of the scriptures I quoted, or find more yourself (there are plenty in the word) so that throughout your day you are reminded of your beauty, your importance and most importantly, you are reminded of your identity. Who you are is right there on those pages of the most important book ever written and it was written by the most important author, the only acceptance we should ever need. Believe that voice. Make it loud in your heart and mind. And don’t ever let another voice overpower it.
