To Know God – Lindsay Schmidt
July 17, 2020

How many of us feel that they know God fully? I would hope that everyone reading this said “no, I am nowhere near knowing God fully.” Because the truth of the matter is that we as humans will never know the height, depth, width or breadth of God. He is infinite. The bible is our gateway to knowing him more daily. John says it best in John 21:25, And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which if they should be written everyone, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen. That verse has been a favorite of mine. Could you imagine knowing someone with that kind of status?! A someone with whom all the world could not contain who they are. It is a beautiful thought that our God, my God, your God, is that deep, that mysterious, that wonderful. Which by the way the word ‘wonderful’ is a word in which describes how God leaves us, full of wonder. We are full of wonder when we think on our God.

But here’s the deal, God is an infinitely deep God, however, he wants us to pursue him. He wants us to dig into the word, to learn about him. He wants us to develop a relationship with him so that we can begin our journey into that which is He. So, let’s take the first way of getting to know God that I mentioned, the bible. That is a place to go to in order to read true, real-life stories of our God, and what he has created and what he has done. Now that is not to say we will find ALL of who he is in the bible, because as I have already mentioned, we will never know ALL of God. But the word is a fantastic place to begin. In those pages we will read stories of how God came to create us. How he led our ancestors through lives of their own. How God robed himself in flesh just to come to Earth to make himself available through Calvary to us. But before that, we can learn of Jesus’ (God robed in flesh) beautiful life and all he came to heal, change, move, and raise. We can learn of how he died for us, then, rose again into heaven in order that we may continue our relationship with him, without the fear of sin being held over our heads, why? Because Jesus died on Calvary so that we may be forgiven daily if we should ask! My goodness! What a beautiful gift that is to all of humanity! There are many things we may learn from the word, the amount of which we will never count. If we read the bible daily, God will open up our eyes to new and glorious parts of him each and every time.

Next, let us take a look at the second way of getting to know God that I mentioned, prayer. We can learn about God through reading the bible, but that will not get us to a place where we have a personal relationship with God, that part is up to us and whether or not we decide to talk with God. Let me say this, God is not a spirit man sitting far, far away on a throne made of diamonds with his arms crossed spewing out commands and judgements for all of humanity. God is a God of understanding. He robed himself in flesh so that he could come to earth and feel what we feel. Hurt as we hurt. He came to earth so that he could experience what we go through on this earth. He even experienced the tempting of satan himself. So, do not for a second get the wrong idea about God. He understands. So, therefore, he is merciful, loving, full of grace and peace and joy. And he wants nothing more than for us to dig into all of who he is. He wants nothing more than for us to wake up in the morning and say “This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it!” He wants nothing more than for you to come running to him crying in order that he may give you the peace you have been searching for your whole life. He knows us. Every little ugly and beautiful bit of us. He created us. Knows the number of hairs we have on our heads. Knows the darkest place that we have ever been to. Now, He, the God of all heaven and earth, wishes for us to delve into a life of getting to know him. What an honor it is to be loved so much that God would want us to know more of him! What a privilege it is that the Lord of Lords would want a relationship with US! Getting to know God should be our lives pure joy. Start today. Pick up your bible, if you don’t have one, go buy one or borrow one. Begin reading. Begin talking to God today. Start simple. 5 Minutes. Then, God will grasp your attention and you will begin giving him more of your time. He will open your eyes, speak into your heart, and give you a love you have never known before. Slowly, we can gain bits and pieces of God. We can begin our very own story of the journey God is writing for us. What a beautiful thing is it to know God.

He gives us Roots so we can Fly. Roots and Wings.
