Flesh yields to its surroundings. In the summertime when the sun beats down on it our flesh can become too hot and can begin to burn. What do we do to prevent that? We put on sunblock to help protect our flesh from the heat of the sun. In the wintertime when the cold creeps in our flesh gets cold, growing goosebumps, chills set in. We dress our flesh in warm clothing in order to help prevent it from getting too cold. But if our flesh gets too hot, it can burn and die. If our flesh gets too cold it can freeze and die. If our flesh dies, it affects the rest of our bodies. The heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, they all begin to experience negative change and eventually die as well. Flesh can die off. So, when our flesh is dead what is left? Spirit. Our spirits are what is left of us, of our being, who we are. When one (flesh) dies off, it ends a life here on earth, but the other (spirit) will remain and never die. Bringing me to the point of all this death talk, what satisfies the flesh holds no weight against what lasts forever. Our flesh needs protecting, we must do the necessary things in order to keep our flesh alive and healthy while on this earth. We must wear protection in the sun, lotion in order to keep from getting too dry, drink water to keep hydrated, wear warm clothing in the cold months, cooler clothing in the hot months. These are all things we learn to do at a young age in order to keep our bodies alive. But what keeps our spirits alive? What is it that we can give to our spirits to feed them? To hydrate, to keep warm and alive? There is only one answer to those questions, Jesus.
The Word tells us in Genesis 2:7, “Jehovah God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Here in this verse we can see that God formed our flesh from the dust of the ground, but our souls were made when he breathed into us. He gave life to us from His life. When he did this, our spirits, our souls became alive. Every breath we breathe is because of him. He is the reason we wake up every single day, he breathes into us and we awaken. He feeds our spirit with his spirit. Here we also see that our flesh was once made from the dust of the ground and one day it will become dust once again, but long after that day comes, our spirits will live still. The bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 3:20 speaks of our flesh, “All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust.” In order to give life to our spirits, we must allow God into our spirits. We do this by being born again in the spirit (receiving the gift of the holy ghost) and water (being baptized in Jesus Name). When we do these things, we are allowing Gods spirit to live inside of us and become our light and guide. Proverbs 20:27 tells us “The spirit of man is the lamp of Jehovah, searching all the innermost parts of the inner being.” This means that God’s light is alive inside of us and we are to shine that light to all we meet. That is why it is so important to allow Gods spirit to live inside of us. He is our food, our light, our guide in this world. His spirit keeps our spirit alive but also guides our flesh. Our flesh will have to yield to our spirit if we tell it to. God is spirit. Therefore, in order to feel Him on a deeper level, we must connect our spirit with his. We do this through prayer, reading our Bible, worship, praise. All these things will deepen our relationship with God. God loved us, all of us, our flesh, spirit, soul, so much that He came down to earth and robed himself in flesh in order to one day die on a cross for us. He knows what time and day our flesh will die and turn back to the dust of this earth, and he cares about what happens to our spirit after that. That is why it is so important for us to not allow the things of this world to take first place in our lives, in our hearts. We are not to be part of this world but to stand apart from this world. If we feed our flesh with only things like t.v., gossip, social media, drugs, and bad relationships we are not allowing our spirits to breathe and live. We are called to crucify our flesh and feed our spirits, that means to not fall into the traps this world and the enemy set before us. These traps can look like things that take up our time when we should be spending time with God in prayer. Relationships that wear and tear us down instead of growing our relationship in God and finding new relationships with people who will pour into us. God is an unyielding God. He will not give up on us. Or flesh can be manipulated to do the things that are good for us. Let’s choose today the things of God and not feed into the yearning of our flesh. Let’s choose today to grow in our spirits rather than following after the desires of our flesh. For one day our flesh will die away and what will become of our spirits? This world is not forever, but eternity will be spent somewhere. Let us pour into our eternity and let the things of this world take second place.
