One Small Step – Lindsay Schmidt
June 16, 2021

Have you ever gotten to a place in your life where you were just so completely done with the way you’ve been living? A place where you find yourself thinking ‘I need a change and I need it now’? It can feel like you have hit a dead end. It feels like you’re living your life on repeat, doing the same things over and over day after day. You get sick of the way you’ve been thinking, the way you’ve been acting, the way you’ve been living life. I think at some point we all hit this point. We feel stuck, overwhelmed by life and we finally say to ourselves “it’s time for a change.”

If this is you, God tells us to run to Him, that He is our rock, our foundation, our joy, our peace, our light and life. He is where change happens.

It may seem basic, simple, minimal, but small steps will bring us to the huge change that we seek in times like the ones I’ve mentioned. A small step such as giving God 5 minutes of your day. God can do a lot in 5 minutes. A small step such as changing the music you listen to. God can speak through music. A small step such as choosing not to speak but to listen. God can say a lot in the quiet moments.

Sometimes we think God needs a huge step from us in order for Him to make a huge change. But really, it’s the little things that make the biggest impact.

Matthew 11:28-30 tells us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

God wants for our days to be full of peace and light. He wishes for nothing but for us to turn to Him daily and give up our burdens to Him. He doesn’t ever want for us to carry our burdens. The things this world can lay on our souls are heavy and hard. But God offers us so much life.

Change happens when we aren’t looking. When our thoughts are focused on good and pure things. When our eyes are seeing beauty. When are hands are holding someone up. When our ears are listening to the still small voice. When our lips are singing praises. When our feet are following after God’s will. It’s in these moments that change takes place. Yes, sometimes change feels painful. When the chiseling takes place, when the turning away from the things holding you back happens, it can be tough. It’s not always easy and swift but doing right and making good decisions will always make you feel better, your days brighter. There is nothing about good change that you will regret when you do it with God.

We all lead different lives and therefore no two stories will be the same. Some have to fall farther before they start the climb back up. For others, it doesn’t take such a huge wake-up call. But either way, taking that first step is always the toughest one. Once that is done, the other steps fall into line. Soon you look back on where you have come from and you’re not five steps farther, you’re a mile. You will look back and it won’t even feel like the same life.

That’s what God can do with small steps toward change.

If today you are looking at your life and you decide you don’t like where you’re at, choose that first step. Choose God. Choose to make the effort to a happier life. It all begins here.

He gives us Roots so we can Fly. Roots and Wings.
